and I completed between September, 2000 and March,
2001 as part of the Engineering Physics degree program at the
University of British Columbia.   In summary this
project involved building a USB device using the PIC 16C745
microprocessor from
Microchip.  The USB device consisted of a microphone, the
microprocessor and other hardware and the
device sent audio data to the host computer.

1.1 spec from usb.org.

A very useful tool for designing HID class devices is the HID
Descriptor Tool also available
from usb.org. This tool allows you to put together the HID description
and run it through the HID parser.

Some other useful tools are available from Intel University Press.
They include ‘USB Single Step’, ‘USBView’, ‘HIDView’ and the HID
Descriptor Tool described above.

If you are using Visual C++, then the ‘hview’ sample program that comes
with the Windows DDK is good for examining the HID descriptor and
values. Unfortunately the program is more complicated than it needs to
be and is not a good example of using the USB functions.

Make sure that the path to the file ’setupapi.h’ is in your header file

The analog signal from
the
microphone was amplified using an op-amp and then digitized using the
16C745’s analog-to-digital feature.  If you are reproducing
this project, I would recommend putting in a filter to remove the
frequencies higher than the microprocessor’s sampling rate. 
The digital data was buffered in the microprocessor and then set to the
host computer over the USB connection.  Since ‘interrupt’
method of transfer only allows 8 bytes of data transfered every 10ms,
this limited the amount of data that could be transfered.

This section describes
the
hardware specific to my project.  Please note that the focus
of this page is on the USB aspects of the project.  My
understanding is that the analog circuity for the microphone is not
well designed.

I used the PIC 16C745
from Microchip
as the USB interface microcontroller. This chip belongs to a two chip
family (along with the 16C765) called the 16c7xx.

The 16C745 is a 28 pin microprocessor operating at 24 Mhz. It has 8K of
program memory, 256 bytes of RAM and 5 x 8bit analog inputs (the 16C765
has 40 pins and 8 analog inputs). The specifications are available from
Microchip. The reference manual for the mid-range microprocessors is
also useful.

Download the development environment from Microchip called MPLAB
(freely available from Microchip’s web site). Another necessary
component is the USB firmware. The support files that I used seem to no
longer exist on the Microchip web site being replaced by a more
sophisticated USB example. The firmware includes the following pieces:

Further update (06/09/27): Tito wrote me to suggest improvements to the amplifer. He made the following suggestion, “I noticed that your audio amplifier is not well polarized. I think it has big distortions because it only amplifies the positive part of the signal. I recommend using a negative amplifier configuration for the OPAMP. You just need to add a voltage divisor and a filter to polarize the OPAMP inputs.”

We achieved our goal and
built
a working device.  This involved building the device hardware
(microprocessor, microphone,spy pen, and supporting electronics) and software
(microprocessor code and host computer code).  Unfortunately,
the relatively low sampling rate by the microprocessor in the
analog-to-digital conversion process mangled the audio signal to make
it indecipherable at the host computer, but loud/soft transitions were
easily detected.

The HID class is supposed
to
include devices such as a mouse, joystick, keyboard, etc. Because the
host computer knows what the data means a device driver is not
necessary for HID devices, the operating system can supply a generic
HID driver. For instance, if you plug in a USB Mouse, it will
immediately work because the OS knows how to interpret information
received from a mouse.

Once a have is connect,
you
want to send and receive data from your applications. This document
describes how you can do with using C in Visual C++. It is also
possible to do this in Visual Basic (see below)

The following examples assume you are using Windows 2000. It should
also work on Windows 98 but I’m not sure what the differences might be.
Windows 95 did not fully support USB.  Linux also supports USB
HID.

The following circuit
connects
the PIC to the usb cable. It is designed to be powered off the USB
cable. The 6 MHz clock controls the internal oscillator.

The ‘reset’ switch, causes a reset condition which should cause most of
the special registers to clear and the program to start again.

The value of R1 is not critical since it is only used as a pull-up for
the MCLR (master clear) pin. The R2 resister is required by the USB
specification and should be 1.5 kOhms. The capacitor C3, is not
critical and simply stabilizes the Vusb pin voltage. The values of the
capacitors, C1 and C2 can be in a range specified in the 16C745
specification (15pf – 69 pf) and may depend on the crystal that you use.

Check that USB power and ground connections are correct before
connecting the chip. It is easy to get turn around between the cable
pinout and the socket pin out.

I have put together some
library code which uses the above api’s to connect to available HID USB
devices.  The code returns a file handle to the USB device
which allows a program to read and write data with the device just like
with a regular file handle.  Note that this code is not a
fully working program – it requires, at the minimum, a main function.

The following circuit is
used
to power the electret microphone and then amplify the signal. The
output signal is connected to one of the analog pins of the 16C745,dstti, we
used pin 2, corresponding to AN0 (analog pin 0).

The components are

The Hardware: A USB cable has
four
wires: power, ground, D+ and D-. The signal wires usually operate in
differential mode (one is high while the other is low). There are two
types of
USB
devices: high speed and low speed. There are differences in the type,blackberry phone cover,
length and connectors that can be used with the two types. Generally the
requirements are stricter for high speed devices. A high speed device
can transfer data at a maximum of 12 Mbs while low speed is limited to
1.5 Mbs.  The PIC 16C745 can only operate at low speed
standard. The connector at
the
computer (A End) is a flattened rectangle while at the device (B end)
the connector is square with two cut-off corners (necessary to be
compliant with the high-speed standard but optional for low speed
devices). Each USB device is
able
to
draw 100mA from the cable which allows a device to be bus powered. A
device can negoiate up to 500mA once connected to the USB cable but
this power may not be available.  If the power is unavailable
the device must stay in a low power setting. Obviously devices can be
powered externally as well. The Software: When a device is
connected, the computer (or a hub) detects the device by a pullup
resister (see circuit). A pullup resister on the D- wire signals a low
speed device, while a high speed device has a pullup on the D+ wire.
When detected a series of enumeration steps are started. The enumeration
process
assigns an identifier number to the device (there can be a maximum of
127 devices on a network) and also tells the host computer what sort of
capabilities a device has (input, ouput, etc). The device also informs
the computer of its name (Vendor, Product, Version and Serial Number). If the device
identifies
itself as a HID (Human Interface Device) then the device describes how
the data should be interpreted. See the section on HID.

The ‘Chapter 9′
standard
protocol support. The name comes from the set the messages being
described in Chapter 9 of the USB specification. This is a file called usb_ch9.asm. The HID interface
support.
This file handles requests for information relating to the HID
specification. This is a file called hidclass.asm. The device descriptor.
This
file contains the data that will be sent to the host during the
enumerator process. Most of the values are fully specified by the USB
spec but the vendor id,ear headphone, product id and version number all specified
here. Importantly, the HID descriptor is stored in this file. This file
is called descriptors.asm
(also known as usb_mouse.asm).
The version you download identifies the device as a mouse to the host. The
demo program. This
program sets up the interrupts and initializes the USB code. It also
runs through a loop that causes the cursor to move in a box shape on
the screen. This program demonstrates how you use the USB specific
functions to communicate with the host. This file is called main.asm
(also known as usb_main.asm). There is also a
definitions include file called usb_defs.inc. The entire project has
an MPLAB project file (usbmic.pjt)
Warning:
It has been a long time since I’ve worked on this project so I do not
know if these files are complete or if they can be compiled directly.

the circuit to allow the Op Amp to amplify the negative portion of the

or more) between R3 and GND. Without signal you will get Vcc/2 at the
input of A/D.”

I had emailed the developer ages ago (twice) about a couple of issues I was having,magnetic card reader, received no response.

I’ve written to the developer a couple of times now with no response.

and btw, if you have the fan problem,good mobile phone, clean the fan intake – only on g5s- that is HIDDEN directly under where the stand goes into the bak of the iMac. this one foxed even my Mac dealer’s techies.

ZEEBIE  Does not work properly with gamepad here. When I configure special settings for a certain game amd start the game it uses the "Any Gaming, Any Application" keys. Completely useless for gaming.

THE MAN IN THE BLACK SEDAN  Had the same exact issues. KPs every 3 days or so. Uninstalled USB Overdrive 3.0.1 about a month ago and haven’t had a KP since.

I’d love to be able to customize… well, to be honest, the whole keyboard,women’s plus size clothing, but that’s a different app, I’m sure. Farting around with the media keys would be great, though,dress flowergirl, and my (misguided?) understanding is, somehow,dresses petite, there’s a way to do it.

THMGHTD  I’m a little embarrassed that I can’t seem to find a definitive answer to this. Maybe my Googling isn’t what it used to be.

I’ve been sure to remove all the SteerMouse components,bluetooth pc adapter, and I had FunctionFlip installed but disabled it and made sure none of its agents are running.

MEGAMAN  I’ve been getting major kernel panics with 3.0.1.

I think it killed my iMac20!!! The screen is black and I can only hear the Drive spin, but it never makes to OSX as I cannot hear no sound when changing the sound level.

1.) I cannot choose these two games anymore to configure mouse key settings: "Diablo II (Carbon)" and "Baldur’s Gate II". I can select each applications? file in the "Choose" dialog, but when I click "Open" there to choose the application,pro duo memory, then the application is not chosen (the popup field still says "Application: Choose Application…") and "Cancel/OK" hangs so that I must force-quit the dialog.

How the hell am I going to sue them, if there is no way I can prove it caused the problem.

It’s plugged in to a 13" MacBook Pro with its lid kept shut and an external Cinema Display as the primary/only monitor. The Status tab of USB Overdrive shows the Apple Optical USB Mouse (which is plugged into the keyboard), but no keyboard.

DOUG ENGELBART  In my old "Overdrive X 10.4.5" everything worked fine. Now I switched to this new v3.0.1 and re-configured my old settings (more than 30) with success,mini spy video camera, but I also got the following issues (OSX.5.8,star headphones, G4):

by using a safeboot and typing the applejack magic it runs and fixes stuff.

Or maybe it was never that good.

iPhone 4 could be Apple?s next Vista say Microsoft It might not be a pretty smooth move but Windows have decided to use their own shortcomings to take a dig at their competitors Apple. With the release of the Windows Phone 7,duo pro 8gb, the company decided to take a few pot shots at their primary market competitor Apple, for the problems they were facing with the unlocked iPhone 4 and its reception. In a recent event, the chief operating officer of Microsoft, Kevin Turner, remarked that the Apple iPhone can become their Vista and that Microsoft was happy about it. Furthermore, he also said that with the Windows Mobile 7, the customer would not have to hold it a certain way to use it.

These remarks are not very different from what is going on around the market but according to the market trends,china tv phones, the sales of the iPhone 3GS Unlocked Handset are not really down. The device has already sold over 1.7 million sets all over the world and there is no sign of the sales slowing down. Even as a lot of the techs review and such companies are chucking their recommendations for the iPhone 4 unlocked gadget, the iPhone is selling like hotcakes around the world. These comments though were made at a Microsoft event which focused largely on their new Windows 7 phone which we think is a hit in waiting for the software giant. Personally we feel that Microsoft should concentrate on what they are doing with their phone rather than attacking Apple.

The interface on this phone looks nice and goes a long way from the previous designs and the layout of the icons are very easy to use and does a lot for the users. Navigation is also quite user friendly. The only thing we can do for now is to just wait for it to release in the market.

Now the hairy details for DOS old-timers like myself who actually enjoy editing config.sys [Cough. Ed.]:

The driver switches you can use are: device=(path)USBASPI.SYS ] /r]

 

/w Wait,supercard one, displays text message for attaching or swapping USB devices

/v Verbose, shows status messages – recommended

/l LUN,r4i revolution sdhc, specifies highest LUN # to be attached to device ID (default=0)

Example config.sys and autoexec.bat files on a DOS boot diskette with USB support for an usb cd-(rom/rw) and hard
disk look like this:

Imagine that you want to use Paragon Drive Backup, Powerquest’s Drive Image, or Norton Ghost, to backup your hard
disk partitions to that nice 120gb external USB 2.0 hard disk you just bought. You can’t do it. Or if your wife/husband
has managed to mess up her/his system so badly that it can’t boot anymore,high power green laser, yet she/he wants you to have a copy of those
nice digital pictures stored on a compactflash card plugged into the compactflash reader?. No way, Jose. Not from DOS,
used to be the phrase.

Before you start scratching your head, let me repeat that this is not related to your favorite linux distro’s or
Windows XP/W2K/98/ME’s USB support, this has to do with people like me,ps3 gaming headset, booting some flavor of DOS to copy files around
or using DOS-based partition back-up software.

The driver scans all three USB controller specs by default, but you can limit which controllers are enabled using
these switches:

L’INQs

Panasonic v2.06 ASPI
Manager for USB mass storage

USBASPI.SYS

(Look for the “F2H” subdirectory after extraction of the downloaded archive)

FTP site: Motto Hairu Mass Storage ASPI
drivers

However, it should be noted that this driver will only map mass storage devices like external hard disks, cd- roms, cd-rw, dvd-rom, zip, jaz, ls-120,freedom bluetooth keyboard, and flash memory to
ASPI devices. Then you need an elusive “ASPI mass storage driver” to map HDs and flash disks it to a drive letter in
DOS. This one goes by the name “di1000dd.sys”,phone watch with camera, commonly referred to as the “Motto Hairu USB Driver”. Don’t ask why,cheap china phones,
it’s called that,iphone cover, I don’t know.

Well, now you CAN.

Before you continue reading and decide to go out and do “bad things” let me mention that legalese on the Panasonic
site most probably prevents you from downloading and using this driver on non-Panasonic devices, yet according to
reports that are floating around on the Interweb, people have been able to use these “universal drivers” on a wide
range of systems with different USB connectivity, UHCI,android mobile phones, OHCI, and USB 2.0’s EHCI with the NEC chipset.

The Panasonic driver also seems to recognise some TI cardbus controllers, making it possible to use USB peripherals
attached to USB (even 2.0!) Cardbus cards. Your mileage might vary. Knowledge of the Japanese language might be
required to read and understand the Panasonic licence agreement or the cease-and-desist letters. Explore at your own
risk.

The minor miracle here is using a driver file called “USBASPI.SYS” (”Panasonic v2.06 ASPI Manager for USB mass
storage”). Given the right parameter incantations, this 16-bit Panasonic-developed DOS driver will let your system boot
good-old DOS -any flavour,ds one, maybe even Caldera’s OpenDOS and recognize all USB devices connected to the respective controllers. So this USB device identification is also useful for
debugging/troubleshooting purposes.

HAVING AN EXTERNAL USB cd-writer or hard disk works wonders as long as your operating system is in good shape.
But if someday the system stops booting, you are lost. Booting from good old MS-DOS or Windows boot diskettes – even
fitted with the needed third party NTFSDOS or EXTFS drivers – gives you access to your fixed hard disk only,32gb micro card, but none
of the USB peripherals can be accessed from the DOS command line.

The Panasonic DOS drivers seem to work on most USB chipset implementations, including Intel and NEC, as well as
NVidia, VIA, and SIS. It seems Panasonic engineers didn’t want to have to write a driver every time for every different
chipset, so they wrote this “universal” driver to work with all possible USB controllers.
