NOVO Aurora 7-inch Wopad V10

TweetAs we begin 2012, it’s exciting to look back and reflect about how we began testing the first Honeycomb slates, and now we are back to elbow-sink in me-too tablets, several of them trimmed down to smaller sizes. So it shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that Ainol released the NOVO Aurora 7″, a mini (and duly named) version of the variety of Ainol slates we’ve already featured. http://www.meebing.com/ainol-novo-7-aurora-android-4-0-tablet-pc-allwinner-a10-1-2ghz-ips-hd-screen-7-inch-8gb-white.html

But in Ainol’s case, maintaining the size of a tablet and ending it there is a chancy proposition. In any case, its earlier 7-inch Ainol had some impediments — namely, average battery life, plaything-like design and a germ that originally kept it from getting up after recharging. Certainly, the Aurora 7″ appears nearly identical, and even sports the same Allwinner 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB Nandflash built in and up to 32GB via micro sd card and creamy take on Android 4.0 OS. Yet, it brings an LED flash, maintains its big brother’s 1024 x 600 display and costs less (considering Meri’s deal of the day price: $174.99) than the first one did when it was first released. So will these advances make the like-wise Ainol stand out? And how does it measure up compared to those other 7-inch tablets we’ve been testing recently? Let’s find out.

Its name NOVO Aurora   too, makes sense: a highly scaled-down 7-inch slate and if anything, the entire key design flourishes: its textured, white plastic back, the IPS HD wide viewing angle, multitouch screen housing, 2MP camera and the smooth-feeling surfaces. As usual, the rounded edges make it easy to hold the tablet in either portrait or landscape mode. Again, when you compare it to slates such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab or T-Mobile Springboard (the Huawei MediaPad), Ainol’s NOVO Aurora projects eminence. http://www.meebing.com/wopad-v10-superpad-vi-10-1-inch-vimicro-cortex-a8-tablet-pc-android-2-3-os-gps-16gb.html

That said, it’s a pleasantly ideal size for a slate, and to be honest, we say the same in every 7-inch tablet we come across with. Among the dimensions and simple-to-grip backing, in fact, typing in landscape and portrait is clear-cut — except if your hands are toddler-sized, then you should benefit from plenty of flexibility in your thumbs for tapping on spelling suggestions, adjusting the volume buttons and other activities.

With Allwinner’s dual-core 1.5GHz, a Ice Cream Sandwich build and 1GB of RAM, the NOVO Aurora has no surprises as much as performance goes. Its screen responds briskly to most of our various taps and swipes, including apps launched promptly enough. And while we played Need for Speed Shift, the tab kept us wanting, serving up glossy graphics during those desperately sudden turns to evade that Tokyo’s fourth track concrete wall.

The biggest plus, as far as we’re concerned, is that Ice Cream Sandwich’s on board. Besides, analyze at your own review card too, if you haven’t already. The Ainol NOVO Aurora 7″—is no rip off. Before it even went public with world’s numerous Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, Ainol made sure its product was swift, fine-built and built to last; a halfway decent camera and a super IPS display thrown in for better measure. Video review below awaits the undecided.
